Trump Defends Iran Agreement but Says Military Action Remains an Option
President Donald Trump has defended the newly announced memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Iran, describing it as an important step toward reducing tensions in the Middle East. However, he also made it clear that the agreement is not a final peace deal and could collapse if Iran fails to meet its commitments.
Speaking during the G7 Summit in France, Trump said the agreement creates a 60-day period for negotiations regarding Iran's nuclear program. The talks are intended to address concerns that have fueled tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel throughout the year.
According to Trump, the MOU represents a framework for future cooperation rather than a permanent settlement. He emphasized that the United States expects Iran to comply with the terms of the understanding. If Iran fails to do so, he suggested that military options could once again be considered.
The president also highlighted the economic importance of the agreement. One of the major goals is to ensure the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important shipping routes for oil exports. Disruptions in the strait have raised concerns among global markets and contributed to higher energy prices.
Trump noted that many world leaders attending the G7 Summit welcomed efforts to restore stability in the region. Several countries have been affected by rising fuel costs and uncertainty surrounding Middle Eastern energy supplies.
In addition to discussing nuclear negotiations, Trump addressed Iran's missile capabilities. He argued that completely eliminating Iran's missile arsenal would be unrealistic, especially when neighboring countries maintain similar military systems. Instead, the administration plans to focus primarily on preventing nuclear weapons development.
The agreement remains in its early stages, and many challenges lie ahead. Analysts believe the next two months will be critical in determining whether negotiations can lead to a more comprehensive and lasting agreement.
For now, the MOU offers a temporary path toward diplomacy while leaving open the possibility of stronger measures if talks fail. The coming weeks will reveal whether both sides are prepared to move toward a more stable future.
